A Connecticut man has been arrested for allegedly bringing a loaded gun into a hospital in New Haven, authorities announced Saturday.
Mohamed Hosny, 23, of East Haven, was transferred by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital from a mental health facility on Friday.
During a safety check, he changed out of his clothes, and “wrapped something in one of his shirts” before throwing everything in the garbage, the New Haven Police Department said in a news release.
Hospital security staff found his behavior suspicious and decided to check the trash, officials said.
That’s when they found a Polymer 80 handgun with no serial number — also known as a “ghost gun” — which had a laser attached to it, one round in the chamber and a 30-round magazine.
The gun also had a “Glock switch” installed, which enabled it to fire as an automatic weapon, police said.

New Haven police officers were dispatched to the hospital just before 1 p.m. on Friday and arrested Hosny, who is also believed to be involved in a recent firearms incident in East Haven.
Investigators said there was no indication Hosny had any plans to assault hospital staff.
“This appears to be an isolated incident,” police said.
Hosny was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, possession of a high-capacity magazine, possession of a firearm without a serial number and possession of an assault weapon.
His bond has been set at $150,000.
